La Sonnambula

Ironically, in the orphan Amina, the young rich landowner Elvino fell in love. The unequal couple moves on the precarious terrain of puberty, the limbo between melancholy and optimism. In order to marry Amina, Elvino has solved his engagement with the landlady Lisa. For additional confusion, the nightly visits of an undead and the arrival of a stranger whose past history with the village on opaque Way is linked. The Sonnambula, which premiered in Milan in 1831, became a world success for bel canto. In Bellini’s “infinite melodies,” the trance of the fall-prone nightwalker found a breathtaking expression.
